You bought a Windows 11 license, the key just landed in your inbox, and now what? This walkthrough covers the activation process from start to finish — including the two or three places people usually get stuck.
Before you start
Make sure your computer is connected to the internet. Online activation completes in a few seconds; offline activation by phone is possible but takes much longer. Open the Settings app (Windows key + I) and head to System → Activation. You’ll see one of two states: “Windows is not activated” with a yellow triangle, or “Windows is activated with a digital license” if a previous installation already activated.
Entering the product key
Click Change product key. Windows will prompt you for your 25-character key, formatted as five groups of five characters separated by hyphens. Paste it in — Windows will accept either uppercase or lowercase. Click Next, then Activate. If everything is correct, you’ll see a green checkmark and “Windows is activated” within ten seconds.
If activation fails
The most common cause of a failed activation is editing software the key is meant for. A Windows 11 Pro key won’t activate Windows 11 Home, and vice versa. Check your edition under System → About and compare it to the edition listed on your invoice. If they don’t match, you can either change Windows edition (a free upgrade from Home to Pro using the right key) or request a different key.
The second-most-common issue is error code 0xC004C003, which means Microsoft’s activation servers are temporarily rejecting the key. This usually clears within a few hours — wait and try again, or use phone activation. Open Run (Windows + R), type slui 4, and follow the prompts.
Verifying activation
Once activation succeeds, your wallpaper personalization options unlock and the “Activate Windows” watermark in the bottom-right corner disappears. You can also confirm by opening Command Prompt and running slmgr /xpr — you’ll see “The machine is permanently activated” for a lifetime license.
One key, one device
A retail Windows license is tied to your Microsoft account on first activation. If you’re upgrading hardware later (new motherboard, new computer), sign in with the same Microsoft account on the new device, then run the troubleshooter under Activation settings. It will let you transfer the license to the new hardware automatically.
