Bitdefender Total Security
Consistently scores 6/6 in protection and 6/6 in performance from AV-TEST throughout 2025. The autopilot mode means you almost never see notifications — it makes decisions silently and only surfaces when you need to act. Includes a VPN with a 200 MB daily limit (full unlimited VPN costs extra), a password manager, and webcam protection. Best fit for: people who want strong protection without micromanaging it.
Kaspersky Premium
Best raw detection rates in the AV-Comparatives Real-World Protection test, frequently catching 99.9% of zero-day threats. Includes an unlimited VPN by default — that alone often justifies the price difference over Bitdefender. Smart Home Monitor scans your network for vulnerable IoT devices. Some governments restrict Kaspersky on government computers; for home use, the geopolitical concerns rarely matter.
Norton 360 Deluxe
The strongest extras package: a full-feature unlimited VPN, 50 GB of cloud backup, dark-web monitoring that alerts you if your email turns up in a leak, and parental controls for up to five devices. Detection scores are very good but not quite at the Bitdefender/Kaspersky level. Best fit for: families who’ll actually use the cloud backup and identity-monitoring features.
ESET Internet Security
The lightest install on this list — under 200 MB of disk usage and a barely measurable CPU impact during scans. Detection scores are excellent. The interface looks dated compared to Bitdefender’s, but if your priority is “I want it on my laptop without slowing it down,” ESET is the answer.
McAfee Total Protection
Detection scores have improved a lot in 2025. The standout feature is the unlimited-device tier: one license covers every phone, tablet, and laptop in the house. Identity Theft Protection tier adds credit monitoring and recovery services. The downside: the interface pushes upgrade prompts more than the others.
Quick verdict
For a single PC: Bitdefender for hands-off use, ESET for low system impact. For a family with multiple devices: Norton 360 Deluxe for the cloud-backup bundle, or McAfee for unlimited devices. For absolute best detection: Kaspersky Premium.
